For the last 10 years Encore.org (formerly Civic Ventures) has honored hundreds of people from around the world for their work in second careers.

Encore, which is based in San Francisco and New York, is dedicated to encouraging, promoting and, in some cases, financing what it calls, “seconds acts for the greater good.”  They focus on helping people from all walks of life embark on second careers – usually after the age of 55.

In early February the group, in cooperation with AARP, honored 6 more people with their “Purpose Prize.”

Winners included:

A journalist who became an advocate for children held in abusive institutions, fighting torture by training activists and changing lives in 36 countries.

A micro-lending champion who focused on equality and economic justice to battle the “feminization of poverty.”

A teacher-turned-Episcopal-priest who helped young and old fiddle in harmony, building connections in rural communities.

A Black Panther who created a refuge where young people could escape the violence in their lives, learn leadership skills and create art for social change.

A former New York State judge who brought human rights and economic justice to over 30,000 farm workers in Florida.

A doctor who has modernized the tradition of house calls, with two generations’€™ support, bringing much-needed health care to 4,000 homebound elderly patients.

You can find a full list of the finalists and more about their remarkable stories at The Purpose Prize website.
